calculate squares on a gird

Mr rees has asked us to work out a 10 by 10 square using n

We answered them in two ways let me show you them both

Here is one way of how we answered,we went 10+10+10-2+10-2 we figured this out by counting all the squares around the outside  so it would be 10+9+9+8 but in a mathematical way it would be n+n-1+n-1+n-2 so the n is equivalent to 10 but this is only the mathematical way to do it you can choose to do it the other way if you want to.

The second way is to go 9+9+9+9=36 or In the mathematical way It would be n-1+n-1+n-1+n-1 because in this situation the letter n is equivalent to 10 but remember this the n isn't always going to be ten it could be any number. To prove the theory that this way works I will do one more for you

Here is how we prove if it works we do it again we will do 10+8+10+8=36 again in the mathematical way it would be n+n-2+n+n-2 and it still equals 36.

Let me ask you two questions, Answer if you want, does this all make sense to you if not tell me in the comments. The other question is can you think of any other way of figuring out this question If so tell me in the comments, if you have figured out another way of doing this and tell me what I have to work on and if you have liked what I have been doing.

The grid we have been using.

creating the illusion of the other mother

changes no longer looks human

taller
angrier
body shape changes
clothes get sharper
more beetle like
sharp angles

The other mother is wearing boring clothes, soft round curved , colour grey, black, red. shades of orange and yellow.

Wearing black, red, grey, curves still there lighting the same as the first, clothing style changes.

Sharpness nose, elbows, clothing eyebrows= emotions red, white, black shows more skin.

Way sharper  head, elbows near joints taller, not very human, Skinner, long neck.

The other mother at the very end is thin, spindly, skeletal, skinny, almost no clothes raggedy skin, no skin, made of metal sharp points head get pointy. Shades of green, black, grey, frightening, creepy

Dull/dim lighting, not a lot of light, feels like dark and creepy.

the director skilfully uses costume ,colour and lighting to create the character of the other mother.

We see a gradual change in the costume from conservative casual clothes to barley anything near the end. Her clothes also become sharper around the edges and are predominately black with highlights of red. When we first see the other mother warm lighting and use of a yellow/ orange colour pallet make her seem warm and inviting however, by the end the use of a dim lighting and green tones make her seem evil and frightening. These film techniques help us understand the film as a whole because they show us the change from a kind and loving other mother to her true form of an evil spider like soul steeling demon.

This is another symbol when the other mother swallows the key because Caroline said * I thought there was only one key* then the other mother had the key and then she swallowed it.

workshop 3

the colour pallet in the office is predominantly made up of blues and greys. This creates and atmosphere of gloom, loneliness and boredom. This is combined with the use of a cold light from the window. The director has used this pallet because in this moment Caroline feels sad  and ignored by her farther who is too busy working to spend time with her.

In the' other office the predominate colours are red and orange. This combined with the use of a warm light creates a mood of cheerfulness, curiosity and safety. The director chose this colour pallet because Caroline has just arrived in the other world and met he other father who wants to spend time with her.

At the end of the film these colour pallets have reversed with the other world becoming dark and gloomy and the real world becoming bright and colourful. This shows Caroline's changing perspective as she becomes happier at home.

The predominate colours in this pallet navy, red, orange, aqua,

These colours create an atmosphere of

The director used these colours because

Red,White,Blue sentences
-Use when you have several ideas to convey about a topic

E.g. In this image lighting is used to make the room feel cold, empty, and depressing
-Use when you have several ideas to convey about a topic
Lighting is used effectively in this shot of the real world kitchen to make it feel dull, depressing, lonely. This is achieved by using a cold light through the cold window. The director has chosen this lighting to remind us that Caroline's real world is boring and lifeless compared to the other world behind the door.

happy,enthusiastic,warm,bright,delightful,safe,welcoming,inviting

Use of a yellow/orange warm light from the light bulb.Outside is night but room feels safe

In the other kitchen we see more things and a sense of delight, security and welcoming. Lighting is used to create this through the use of a yellow, orange warm light from a bulb above the table.
The director has done this to highlight the positive relationship between Caroline and her other parents. Whilst her real parents ignore her, the other parent acknowledge and want to spend time with her. This is re-enforced by the contrasting use of cold and white light in Caroline  real world.

swirly, lit up in colour, colourful, some bright colour, black.

The colour used in the photo is a bright and welcoming colour it makes it seem less creepy that she is  going through a random tunnel as we don't see any colour in her normal world until she looks through the tunnel and in the other world. The director has chosen these colours because this is the point where she finds the other world. Whilst her normal world has no colour the other world that she is about to find has a lot of colour to it.
